The Kenwood Fire Protection District is the sponsor of Fire
Explorer Post 31 and chartered with the Boy Scouts of America.
Under the watchful eye of qualified firefighter instructors
young adults are given the training and guidance needed to attain the level of
skills required of today's fire service. They will learn the hard work,
discipline, leadership and structured work environment that promotes safety and
teamwork toward successfully completing a common objective. Explorers will also
gain a sense of pride in working within and serving the community. Parents will
witness the positive outcome of having their child enroll in this program.
Fire Explorers are issued complete fire protection gear just
as adult firefighters. This includes structure fire pants and jacket, boots,
helmet, gloves, and flash hood. For wildland fire training they will receive
the lighter weight Nomex and FR cotton pants and coat, web gear, and fire tent.
Live fire training is not a part of the Explorer curriculum until the Explorer
has received several years of training that often surpasses that of adult
firefighters, have been signoff by their instructors, and have received
permission of their parents. Safety is our number one priority.
Training consists of safety procedures, fire behavior,
dragging hose, raising ladders, cutting handline, hose stream operations,
search and rescue, emergency medical care, vehicle extrication, hazmat
operations, and many other things most adults never get to see or do in their
lives. You will also participate in community activities and fund raising
activities. After awhile you may qualify as a "Responding Explorer" which means
you can ride along and work on actual incidents with the fire department.
